Q: Why did Atticus accept the job to defend Tom Robinson?

    1. No it wasn't that he felt confident, but it was because he wanted to uphold his sence of justice and self-respect. He wanted to be a consistent, therefore he doesn't want to turn away a man because he is black.

    2. Kipp how would you feel if you turned a man down for color of his skin?

    3. I know that's all true, I was going into a psychological view of things.

      Delete
    7. Sammie is definitely correct. Atticus's personality has been consistent throughout the book so far.

    8. No kipp I'm not. Becca did the same thing. I'm agreeing and doing what our assignment says to do.

    9. I agree with Toni, she is simply doing what the assignment said to do, the same goes with Atticus, he is doing what is right. JUST. LIKE. TONI. :)

    13. Yes Sammie is right with the parts that he wants to do what is right. He doesn't want to turn down the case because he is black. Also because he knows that he didn't do it.

    2. He didn't feel like he had to, he felt like he should because he knew he was Internet and wanted to stand up for what's right.

      Delete
    3. I agree he doesn't want to turn him down and then he's just like all the other white people but he doesn't want to screw the guy over just by the color of his skin

      Delete
    4. Atticus already stated that it's more of a sense of honor, saying the kids could never take him seriously and wouldnt have to listen to what he says if he didn't.

It takes a good lawyer to take on a case even though he knows there is hardly a chance to win the case in the first place but still tried his hardest.

  6. Atticus is the same in the house as he is in the streets, he didn't care what anyone else was thinking. He was an honest man and doing his job. He didn't care about the color of Tom's skin.

    2. I agree with Toni, he is just trying to do the right thing.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Becca and Toni. Atticus knows what's right and what's wrong and he isn't against blacks like the other people in the village are.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Elke, Becca and Toni. Atticus was just doing what he believed was right. And he didn't care what anyone else was thinking.

      Delete
    5. Yea, too bad the rest of the town refuses to see that :(

  7. Maybe Atticus just wants the publicity. After all, this will be a very "public" trial. Perhaps he just wants to get noticed.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't think Atticus would want the publicity, he seems like a very humble man who is just trying to live simply and tries to do what is right. That is just my opinion though.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Becca. Atticus acts very respectable and it doesn't seem like he just wants publicity.

      Delete
    3. Atticus doesn't want publicity. He talked about very lawyer has one case in his life that can change their personality. This is a very important and possible life changing case.

      Delete
    4. I agreee with Mitch, Atticus is a lawyer that works for the people and he wants to do the right thing.

      Delete
    5. Ms. Oneill wouldn't this do hurt his business? Being that it's in the 1930s I don't see how he thinks being a black mans lawyer in the south would be good for business. It just comes down to his morals.

      Delete
    6. I doubt that he wants publicity. Atticus doesn't seem like the kind of man that would do that because he is honest and doesn't lie to others. He is doing what he thinks is right and by helping Mr. Robinson, he is doing just that.

      Delete
    7. I kind of agree with you there a bit Michael. I mean he is doing the right thing by sticking to his morals and being a good man, but since he is the lawyer of a BLACK man and not a WHITE man people could look upon him differently for defending a black man even though he is known for being a good person. Also, I don't think he wants the publicity. Just like everyone else is saying he is just doing what he believes is right even if other people don't agree with him because he doesn't care what other people have to think or say about it.

      Delete
    8. Good point Mike. I'll agree with you on this one. I don't think he wants the publicity either, unless he feels that the publicity will help the greater good in the long run.

  8. I feel that Atticus Finch is taking on this case because he feels that it is the right thing to do even if he knows that he won't win the case. He probably feels that justice needs to take place even if it is difficult to achieve.

    1. Kinda like Mr. Jameson in Roll of Thunder.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I didn't even consider that.

    3. I agree with Becca on this one with Atticus feeling that justice needs to be served no matter what.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Evan and Becca. He did feel that justice was needed.

      Delete
  9. Atticus accepted it because he doesn't care about what other people think or talk about him. He knows that this is his job and he has to do it. He acts in public the same as at home, he always tells the truth and he isn't a racist. But at this time it's hard to fight for and not against black people as a lawyer and the chance to win is very little.

    1. I agree with Elke. He doesn't care what other's think. He knows that he is probably going to lose, but he knows he has to at least try. Atticus isn't doing this for publicity, he doesn't care if the person is black or white. He is doing what he thinks is right.

      Delete
    2. I agree with both of you. He is the same in both places so why would he be doing this for publicity? He knows what he wants. He feels like it is just a case and it doesn't matter who it is.

      Delete
  10. Atticus Finch understands morals. He works for the people not solely himself. He works with the law. Law is blind, it doesn't matter if he is defending a white or black man the law respects all, as Atticus does.

    3. I agree with Evan and Somers there wouldn't be a fair trial and Atticus is doing the right thing with fallowing the law and respecting everyone.

      Delete
    4. Ya, you are right. The law isn't prejudiced. But the judges and people are.

  11. Atticus just does what he wants because he doesn't care what anyone else thinks of him. And he acts the same at home as he does in public.

  12. Atticus is a nice and honest man. He doesn't care what other's think of him. He likes his job and he isn't going to turn down a job of defending Tom Robinson just because of his skin color. He has values and beliefs that he is willing to fight for no matter what the circumstances.

    1. I agree with Kirsten! What you said is exactly what I was thinking. Atticus could care less to what other people think and he isn't afraid to defend a black man.

    2. I agree with Kirsten! Atticus isn't afraid what other people think and will defend a black man if he wants to.

      Delete
    3. I agree with that. I think you described it perfectly.

  13. Atticus knows in his heart that what he is doing is right. He does not care if he is ridiculed by other people. He doesn't care if people believe Tom is "different" because he knows that standing up for what you believe in and doing the right thing is what he wants and nobody is going to stop him.

    1. Your right, if the lawyer was prejudice it wouldn't be very fair.

      Delete
    2. I second that, if they don't truly believe in what they're defending they shouldn't be their lawyer.

      Delete
  15. He accepted the case because he believes in that everyone should be fair and he's the type of person who will help out anyone who needs the help

    1. I agree with Irene, everyone should have a fair trial and Atticus is willing to help people like that.

  16. I think that Atticus took the case because of his moral values. He is honest and for what's right. He isn't crooked and wants justice to the innocent man.

    1. I agree completely with Mitch he is trying to prove an innocent mans innocence and fallow his morals.

  17. I think Atticus took the case because that what he felt was right. He didn't care if the man was white or black.

    1. It would affect his job if he discriminated against race.

    1. I agree with you mariah even though he knows he won't win he could at least try even though people will treat him different after this case

  19. Atticus wanted to take the case because felt that it was the right choice. In the book he tells Scout that in every lawyers lifetime has a case that affects them personally. He says this is his case because he is a member of Calpurnia's church.

    1. I completely agree. Since he is a lawyer he might have to do some thing that will be frowned upon by some but it is his job.

    2. I tot tally agree. He took the case because he knew what was right, even though he knew others would look down on him because of it.

  20. Atticus's beliefs are weighted to do the right things rather then be a follower. Honesty, and fairness are some words that discrib Atticus. I would want Atticus to be my lawyer. Kyle Hillmann

    1. But what if you were guilty, then he has to lie and that is standing up for what is wrong. Unless you were the black man In this case, I would want him too.

      Delete
    2. Lying goes with the territory of being a lawyer, so even though Atticus is an honest man I belive everybody lies at some point ESP. lawyers. Right?

      Delete
    3. First, why would it be guilty for something. If I were guilty of anything I'm skilled enough to not get caught. Mitch help me understand why Atticus should represent a dishonest black man if he supports doing the right thing and making fair choices.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Sammie. She's a start girl Mitch I wouldn't tussle with her.

      Delete
    5. I don't know where you guys got that Tom did something wrong Tom is innocent man I know how the story ends so I am not going to say any more and yes lawyers lie

  21. I think that he did it for honor of being a lawyer, even though the social stigma of defending a black man is a heavy burden he knows it's the right thing to do.

P.S. I was gone yesterday, this s Dani

    ReplyDelete
  22. Atticus fallowed his morals and fallowed the laws of being a lawyer, he believes in his job and wants to prove a mans innocence for the right reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think Atticus would fight for anyone. It doesn't matter what color they are or how much money they have. It is his job and he is going to accept anyone who asks him to fight for them.

    1. I agree with you Katie! Atticus isn't afraid to stand up for a black man and it's his job to defend people.

      Delete
    2. I agree wholeheartedly, he is a lawyer of morals who defends anyone without predjudust.

      Delete
  24. Atticus does what he thinks is right and stands by his decisions he doesn't care if it is not what the town thinks. The reason he thinks he can't win is because the jury is full of white men who don't like blacks. His friends and family will stick by him the town might not.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ether way, win or lose, he is gonna get linched.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He didn't get lynched Schaefer Atticus did a good job the jury is just raciest

      Delete
    2. No shafter. He is not going to be lynched!

      Delete
  26. Atticus Finch is defending this man because he believes it is the right thing to do. He is a fair lawyer who believes that everyone deserves to be represented no matter the race. It would make a bigger problem if he refused to defend him because that would mess up his reputation as a lawyer.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Atticus decided to defend Tom Robinson because unlike everybody else he doesn't judge people based on he color of their skin. He knows that it is the right thing to do. Even though Tom in black, Atticus knows he deserves all the rights to a good trial as any white man!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Atticus stated that they're is one case Ina lawyers life that they don't want to do, but must do. It could be life changing. Accepting Tom Robinsons was a life changing case that could possibly put Atticus in danger if he defends him well, or possibly wins the case

    ReplyDelete
  29. Atticus isnt afraid of defending a black man. He probably already knows that he will get judged for this but he doesn't care. The jury is all white and Atticus pretty much already knows they will lose but he wont go down without a fight.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Atticus knows he cannot win, and as we found out he didn't win, but he still tried because he's fighting for human rights, he is almost like a humanitarian, he doesn't let time affect him. He will fight for what he knows is right.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Atticus didn't care what color Tom Robison skin color was he was going to defend him anyway

    ReplyDelete
  32. Atticus defended Tom Robinson because he knew it would be the right thing to do since he believed he was an innocent man. It would also give him a bad reputation if he declined the case.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Atticus is a person who sees others "without their skin", and doesn't judge his clients seeing that anyone can be proven of innocence or being guilty, nobody is immune to the law, no matter their color.
